Rail Safety at Stake: NRC to Tackle Staff Fatigue with New Mental Health Plan
The Nigerian Railway Corporation is making mental wellbeing central to its safety strategy. MD Kayode Opeifa warns that stress, fatigue and low morale among staff now pose serious risks across the rail network. Speaking on World Day for Safety and Health at Work, he said workplace safety must extend beyond physical hazards to include psychosocial factors. Long shifts, night duties and limited welfare at remote stations are heightening pressure on workers. Under its 2026 agenda, the NRC will improve working conditions, strengthen welfare systems and expand access to mental health services. Opeifa urged employees to report any emotional or psychological strain early, stressing that “silence is not safety.” These reforms aim to keep staff motivated, protect passengers and maintain public confidence in Nigeria’s rail services.
