May Other Women Find the Courage to Choose Life: Mourning My Childhood Friend Lost to Domestic Violence

May Other Women Find the Courage to Choose Life: Mourning My Childhood Friend Lost to Domestic Violence — 1 of 3
1 / 3

I lost my childhood friend Omerebere Faith Okafor to domestic violence. She married at 17 and died at 26. Since I heard of her passing, it has been hard to accept that she is gone. Faith was more than a victim; she was my friend, my sister, and a beautiful soul. Childhood was full of laughter with you. No woman should die trying to save a marriage that isn’t worth the pain. I share her story so that other young women may find the courage to speak up, seek help, or walk away before it’s too late. Your life matters more than reputation, religion, or what people will say. Through Faith’s memory, may every woman choose life. Rest well, Mrs. Omerebere Faith Okafor—your voice and memories will never be forgotten.

What steps can communities take to support families affected by domestic violence and honor memories of women like Faith?

Absolutely. We should establish local support groups, provide legal and emotional aid to families, and hold yearly memorial events for Faith.

True, community vigils matter, but we must also fund crisis hotlines and legal clinics for survivors before memories fade.

It seems tragic that so many young brides face violence behind closed doors despite legal protections meant to keep them safe.

I'm not convinced awareness alone can prevent these tragedies; we need concrete policy changes and enforcement, not just awareness campaigns.

Community shelters and emergency hotlines need more funding and better staffing to offer real refuge for women escaping abusive marriages.
