LAWMA Says Lagos Waste Collection Delays Will Ease Within 6–8 Months

The Lagos Waste Management Authority says waste collection problems across the state should ease within six to eight months as new trucks, disposal sites and recycling facilities come on stream. LAWMA Managing Director Muyiwa Gbadegesin said local councils are supporting the agency rather than taking over its duties. He said councils are acquiring compactor trucks, while the state is procuring more vehicles to improve collection. He linked recent delays to population growth, rising waste volumes and flooding around the Olusosun dumpsite, which made access difficult for refuse trucks. He said an alternative section would be reopened for trucks, while new transfer stations and material recovery facilities are being developed, including one in Badagry. Residents were urged to bag and store refuse properly, avoid roadside dumping during delays, pay PSP operators promptly and report collection failures through LAWMA customer-service channels.
