Presidency: Nigeria Already Has 13,500MW, Obi’s 10,000MW Pledge Misses the Point
The Presidency fired back at Peter Obi’s plan to add 10,000 megawatts in four years, saying Nigeria already has an installed capacity of about 13,500MW. A presidential adviser argued that the real issues are gas shortages, over N4 trillion in legacy debts and an ageing transmission grid, not a lack of generation capacity. He noted that many plants aren’t operating at full potential due to unpaid debts to gas suppliers. Since taking office, the administration has moved to tackle these challenges by signing the Electricity Act to allow states into power generation and by proposing a Grid Asset Management Company to modernise key infrastructure.
