Nigeria Vows to Protect Citizens and Investments Amid South Africa Xenophobia
The Nigerian government has condemned the wave of xenophobic attacks in South Africa and pledged not to tolerate any damage to its interests or humiliation of its nationals. Thousands protested on June 30, demanding undocumented foreigners leave, leading to clashes and the deployment of security forces. Presidential Adviser Demola Oshodi said Nigeria prioritises the safety of its citizens over investments. He confirmed that hundreds of vulnerable Nigerians have been repatriated and that Abuja is engaging South African authorities to safeguard both people and properties. Acting High Commissioner Alexander Ajayi added that the government will systematically document businesses and homes left behind by returning nationals. Nigeria plans to work with Pretoria to pursue compensation and ensure no citizen’s years of work are lost.
