When Allegations Turn Lethal: From Deborah’s Case to Today

When Allegations Turn Lethal: From Deborah’s Case to Today — 1 of 2
1 / 2

When false accusations lead to mob killings, innocent lives are lost. As a Nigerian who rejects tribal and religious bias, I find the recent lynching of a sister wrongly accused to be deeply tragic. Our anger rarely targets bandits, terrorists, and kidnappers who wreak havoc, yet a defenseless woman accused of wrongdoing can be dragged from police custody and killed by a mob. This hypocrisy turns allegations into death sentences. The haunting memory of Deborah Emmanuel’s cries for mercy reminds us that due process must prevail over vengeance. Who allowed this brutality? Why was her life not protected? A society that normalises jungle justice endangers us all. Until we choose justice over rage, any of us could become tomorrow’s victim. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
