‘Maybachs Are Fine, But Help the Poor’: First Lady Tells Burna Boy and Davido
Senator Oluremi Tinubu urged top Nigerian artists, including Burna Boy, Davido and Asake, to invest part of their wealth in charitable foundations. She made the appeal during the launch of the National Community Food Bank in Kogi State, asking entertainers to support vulnerable Nigerians alongside their luxury lifestyles. Citing Akon as a philanthropic role model, she said owning luxury cars is acceptable but urged celebrities to use their resources to help pepper sellers, vegetable vendors and other small-scale entrepreneurs. She also highlighted a graduate who turned to selling akara in Abuja, now employing 12 workers after receiving support. The First Lady’s remarks align with her Renewed Hope Initiative, which encourages women and youth to embrace small businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kuli-kuli as economic empowerment strategies.
