Women Leaders Urge Strategic Investment in Africa’s Next Development Chapter

Women Leaders Urge Strategic Investment in Africa’s Next Development Chapter

Women leaders, policymakers and development partners gathered in Abuja for the Women Leaders Networking Meeting themed “Women Leading Africa’s Next Chapter.” The event was convened by UNDP Nigeria and co-hosted by the Ministries of Women Affairs and Foreign Affairs. At the gathering, UNDP Regional Director for Africa Ahunna Eziakonwa stressed that Africa must create systems enabling women to lead transformation at scale, not just participate. She argued inclusive leadership is a strategic investment in stronger institutions, better governance and sustainable development. Panelists highlighted initiatives such as the African Facility for Women in Political Leadership and the Africa Academy for Women in Political Leadership, which drew over 1,300 applicants. They also emphasised leveraging AfCFTA and innovation platforms to strengthen women-led enterprises. Ministers and governors’ spouses pledged to deepen mentorship, build stronger networks and sustain investments in programmes that ensure women’s leadership becomes a defining force in Africa’s development.
