My Partner’s Son Comes First Financially, but Where Do I Fit?
I have been with Alfred for almost two years. Three months into the relationship, I discovered he had a six-year-old son whose mother died during childbirth. I was upset that he hid it, but I eventually forgave him. I understand that his son must come first. However, I feel hurt when our plans are repeatedly cancelled because of expenses for the child. Our anniversary trip was cancelled for a laptop, and my birthday outing was postponed because of school fees. We are discussing marriage, but we do not have open conversations about money or shared financial goals. I do not want to compete with his son. I want us to plan properly for our future, including savings, travel, investments and a possible business.
