Nigerian National Jailed in Malta for Eight Years Over Cocaine Smuggling

Nigerian National Jailed in Malta for Eight Years Over Cocaine Smuggling

A 53-year-old Nigerian man was sentenced to eight years in prison after admitting to importing 100 cocaine capsules into Malta. Local media reported that he arrived on a flight from Brussels and was arrested at the Malta International Airport in July 2025. He faced charges of conspiracy, unauthorized importation, possession with intent to supply, and offering to supply the drug. Although initial searches at the airport found no drugs, he later admitted to swallowing nearly one kilogramme of cocaine with an average purity of 87%. Under a joint agreement with the Attorney General, he received an eight-year custodial term and a €15,000 fine. The court also ordered expert costs, asset forfeiture, and destruction of the seized drugs. Judge Natasha Galea Sciberras highlighted the seriousness of large-scale organised drug crime.

Focusing on the sentence overlooks how drug syndicates recruit couriers with limited options and deep-rooted economic pressures.

Strengthening airport screenings and improving community support programs might help prevent such smuggling attempts before they start.
