Retrial of Medical Team Accused in Diego Maradona’s Death Begins

Retrial of Medical Team Accused in Diego Maradona’s Death Begins

A San Isidro court near Buenos Aires has opened a new trial against seven health professionals charged with negligent homicide in the death of football icon Diego Maradona. The retrial follows a mistrial nearly a year ago and will hear testimony from almost 100 witnesses. Defendants include psychiatrists, surgeons, physicians and nurses who treated Maradona after his 2020 health crisis. Prosecutors say evidence shows the team ignored treatment protocols, turning his home care into a “theatre of horror.” Defence lawyers argue his years of addiction and chronic illness made his death inevitable. An eighth nurse faces a separate jury at a later date. This globally watched trial will revisit whether Maradona’s medical staff failed to protect one of football’s greatest stars.

What impact do you think hearing from almost a hundred witnesses will have on this retrial of Maradona's medical team?

How might those nearly one hundred testimonies influence the weight of evidence in this retrial?

Hmm, hundred witnesses sound flashy, but numbers alone no guarantee make case clearer.

It's surprising they opened a new trial after last year's mistrial without clear new evidence emerging.

Negligent homicide charges feel too harsh given the complexity of medical care and decisions made under intense courtroom scrutiny.

Watching how this trial manages expert testimony and procedural gaps could guide improvements in sports medicine oversight elsewhere.
