Zelensky Calls on EU to Seize Russian Oil and Block ‘Shadow Fleet’ Tankers
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has urged EU nations to adopt tougher laws that block Russian shadow fleet oil tankers and allow seizure of their cargo. He made the appeal while addressing leaders of the Joint Expeditionary Force in Helsinki. “We need joint action to create strong laws in Europe that allow countries to block Russian tankers and confiscate the oil,” Zelensky said. He added that this measure would strip Russia of a key tool to pressure Europe. He praised recent enforcement by Denmark, Sweden and France, which seized vessels suspected of evading sanctions. In one case, the French navy intercepted a tanker in the Mediterranean, while Swedish authorities detained a ship over alleged document falsification. The United Kingdom has also introduced new powers for its military to board and seize sanctioned vessels entering its waters. According to EU data, nearly 600 ships are believed to be part of Russia’s shadow fleet and currently face sanctions.
