Akande: Tinubu and Atiku’s Corruption Allegations May Cancel Each Other Out in 2027
Former presidential aide Laolu Akande says corruption allegations are unlikely to give either President Bola Tinubu or former Vice President Atiku Abubakar a clear advantage ahead of the 2027 election. Speaking on a television programme, Akande said both men have faced public scrutiny over old allegations for years. He argued that neither camp can credibly claim the moral high ground if the contest becomes focused on corruption claims. He said supporters may continue to revive controversies linked to Tinubu and Atiku, including past US legal and corruption-related cases. However, he maintained that voters may place greater weight on candidates’ records, policy plans, and their ability to tackle Nigeria’s economic and security challenges. Akande added that only genuinely new evidence is likely to significantly change the political impact of these long-running allegations.
