Sunday Dare Backs Oluremi Tinubu’s Call for Microbusinesses

Sunday Dare Backs Oluremi Tinubu’s Call for Microbusinesses

President Tinubu’s media adviser, Sunday Dare, has defended First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s suggestion that Nigerians explore small-scale ventures to cope with the economic crunch. He said critics missed her point about self-reliance and the dignity of labour. Dare emphasized that Nigeria’s informal sector—from akara sellers to market traders—remains the backbone of the economy across all regions. He argued that petty trade has long supported families and communities nationwide. To illustrate, he shared how his own mother sold akara, bananas and oranges to fund his education, and how he once carried bananas to markets in Jos on his head. He asked why what worked decades ago should be dismissed today. He concluded that every thriving enterprise begins small and urged Nigerians to view micro-enterprises as a valid path to economic growth.

It seems like emphasising small businesses shifts responsibility onto individuals without addressing the root causes of inflation and job scarcity.

Suggesting everyone start microbusinesses overlooks the fact many lack startup capital and training to make those ventures sustainable.

Maybe government partnerships could offer affordable loans and mentorship programmes to help micro-entrepreneurs turn these small businesses into reliable income sources.
