WAFCON 2026: Algeria Beat Morocco on Penalties to Win Historic Bronze

Algeria won bronze at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating hosts Morocco 3-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in the third-place play-off. Morocco took the lead through Kautar Azraf before half-time and later had a second effort ruled out. Algeria kept pushing and Lina Boussaha equalised in the 83rd minute to send the match to a shootout. Algeria converted their penalties to secure a historic third-place finish. The result also caps their best-ever WAFCON campaign, which included a first semi-final appearance and qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.

Coming back in a third-place match, then holding their nerve on penalties, makes this bronze feel especially significant for Algeria.

Historic bronze is deserved, but the match still sounds like a very fine-margin result rather than total control by Algeria.

Algeria can take confidence from their resilience, while Morocco will need to turn their first-half advantage into a settled result next time.
