Lagos to Boost N16.14 Trillion Food Economy with Mega Food Hub and Reforms
The Lagos State Government has unveiled a plan to transform agriculture into a N16.14 trillion food economy through major infrastructure and market reforms. At a recent press briefing, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems outlined a coordinated food systems strategy covering production, storage, processing, distribution and digital trading platforms. The aim is to strengthen food security and attract private investment. A flagship project, the Lagos Central Food Systems and Logistics Hub in Epe, will handle over 1,500 trucks daily and process 1.5 million tonnes of food annually. Its first phase, featuring cold storage, processing centres and quality control labs, is set for commissioning this year. Additional steps include the Produce for Lagos initiative, a N500 billion Offtake Guarantee Fund, expanded agro-produce hubs, and the Imota Rice Mill’s expanded operations. Over 66,000 youths and farmers have also received training through state agripreneurship programmes.
