Court Adjourns Hearing on Goodluck Jonathan’s 2027 Eligibility to May 11
A Federal High Court in Abuja has adjourned until May 11 a suit seeking to disqualify former President Goodluck Jonathan from the 2027 presidential race. The plaintiff’s lawyer said he needed time to respond to a preliminary objection filed by the defence. During proceedings, Jonathan’s counsel revealed he learned of the case only through media reports and questioned why similar eligibility issues already decided by the courts were being revisited. The suit, filed by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, argues that Jonathan has served two terms under the 1999 Constitution and cannot run again. It seeks declarations barring him from presenting himself to any party and restraining INEC from listing him as a candidate. INEC and the Attorney-General did not appear in court. Justice Peter Lifu ordered that hearing notices be properly served on all respondents before the next date.
