Ruto Praises Dangote Refinery for Ending Nigeria’s Fuel Shortage

At an infrastructure summit in Nairobi, Kenya’s President William Ruto credited Aliko Dangote’s private refinery with solving a fuel scarcity that Nigeria’s public oil wealth failed to resolve for decades. Ruto used this example to argue that Africa has the talent and capital to tackle its own energy challenges without looking to Europe or Asia. He urged regional leaders, industrialists and financiers to back plans for an East African refinery modeled on Dangote’s Lagos facility. Dangote, who attended the summit, pledged support for the proposed project if governments show firm commitment. Public refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna have struggled despite repeated maintenance, leaving private investment to fill the gap. Critics note that fuel supply and pricing pressures remain high for many Nigerians even after the Dangote refinery began operations.

It's impressive Kenya praises a private refinery, but I'm curious if this success can truly translate to Nigeria's wider refining challenges.

Focusing solely on private capital overlooks issues like corruption and infrastructure gaps that public investment must also address.

To ensure sustainable fuel supply, combining private refineries with better regulatory frameworks and local workforce training seems essential.
