When I Paid for Patient Assistants at Anambra Teaching Hospital
In August 2021, I took my sick mother to Anaku Teaching Hospital in Anambra State. The outpatient ward was crowded and we faced long benches and long waits. A well-dressed graduate approached us with an offer: for a ₦1,000 token paid to the hospital, she would run errands, make payments, collect receipts and test results, and guide us through hard-to-find departments. The service was smooth and saved us time. Fast forward to 2026, I returned for a dental implant. I was shocked to learn the patient assistant scheme had been discontinued. Many patients refused to pay, insisting nurses should do it free. I spent over an hour queuing and battling poor POS networks. I realized how hard it is to introduce even small improvements in our public hospitals. The old frustrations are back.
