Timi Frank Petitions US to Probe Gbajabiamila’s Remarks, Demands His Resignation

Timi Frank Petitions US to Probe Gbajabiamila’s Remarks, Demands His Resignation — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Political activist Timi Frank has written to the United States government to investigate Femi Gbajabiamila, the President’s Chief of Staff, over comments he says threaten Nigeria’s democracy. Frank’s petition follows a leaked video in which Gbajabiamila urges an opposition lawmaker to remain in a smaller party to divide rivals and hints at court support. Frank calls the remarks reckless and an infringement on judicial independence. He asserts the comments reveal a deliberate effort by the Presidency to weaken parties such as the PDP, SDP, NNPP and ADC. Frank also urges US authorities to examine Gbajabiamila’s tax and financial compliance as an American citizen. Insisting that resignation is the only honourable response, Frank warns that public office holders must respect the rule of law and safeguard Nigeria’s multiparty system.

What are the possible consequences of asking a foreign government to intervene in Nigeria's internal political disputes?

Absolutely. Foreign intervention can create legal complications, fuel nationalist backlash, undermine sovereignty and diplomatic ties.

Do you really think inviting the US won't undermine Nigeria's sovereignty and give them undue influence here?

It's interesting that a leaked video could spark a call for resignation rather than a domestic fact-finding process first.

I dey wonder if Timi Frank's appeal to the US distracts from stronger local accountability measures we fit pursue instead.

A practical step might be to set up an independent parliamentary committee to review the remarks and recommend any necessary sanctions.
