Ganduje Publicly Acknowledges Sanusi II as Kano Emir After Long Fallout

Former Kano governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has openly recognised Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II as the Emir of Kano and chairman of the state’s council of chiefs. He addressed Sanusi by his full traditional title during the swearing-in of Deputy Governor Murtala Sule Garo at the Government House in Kano. This marks the first time Ganduje has honoured Sanusi in that capacity since their public dispute. In 2020, Ganduje deposed Sanusi and appointed Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf later reinstated Sanusi, but Ado Bayero initially refused to step down amid claims of backing from Ganduje and the federal government. Relations shifted again after Governor Yusuf defected to the APC. Sanusi has since been permitted to hold the annual Sallah Durbar, ending the ban imposed when violence broke out at previous events.

Now that Ganduje publicly acknowledged Sanusi II as Kano Emir, what effects could this have on traditional council unity and regional politics?

Are you asking about impacts on council cohesion or on Kano's wider political alliances?

I understand the optimism, but I doubt unity will come so fast. old rivalries and political interests still loom large.

It's interesting that he waited until the deputy governor's swearing-in to use Sanusi's full traditional title, feels more strategic than heartfelt.

This sudden recognition seems driven more by political expediency than genuine reconciliation, so I'm not convinced it marks a real end to the fallout.

Local elders and traditional council members should ensure clear communication channels now, so governance decisions remain transparent and avoid reigniting old disputes.
