Ogun Pushes for National Cooperative Bank and Full Digitalisation of Cooperatives
Ogun State Government has urged the creation of a national cooperative bank and complete digitalisation of co-operative activities nationwide. This call featured among resolutions at the 8th Regular Meeting of the National Council on Cooperative Affairs in Abuja. Mr Samuel Mustapha, Ogun’s Director of Cooperative Services, stressed the need to revive cooperatives as engines of agriculture, job creation, and grassroots development. Proposals include establishing a standalone Ministry for Cooperatives, a cooperative fraud unit, and a cooperative share exchange to drive investment. Commissioner Hon. Ademola Balogun highlighted that digital tools will boost transparency, data management, and ease of doing business for societies. The council also backed a review of the 2004 Cooperative Act and endorsed a Cooperative Bank of Nigeria to expand inclusive finance for members. Participants praised President Tinubu for prioritising cooperative growth to enhance food security, create jobs, and support inclusive economic expansion. Ogun State secured hosting rights for the council’s 2027 meeting.
