ITF and CTIN to Train 100,000 Artisans Nationwide to Prevent Building Collapses

ITF and CTIN to Train 100,000 Artisans Nationwide to Prevent Building Collapses

The Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and the Cement Technology Institute of Nigeria (CTIN) are set to upskill 100,000 construction artisans across the country. Participants will receive hands-on training in masonry, carpentry, tiling, electrical installation, Plaster of Paris work, plumbing and pipe fitting. The programme will roll out in phases and officially launches on April 21, 2026 in Lagos with top government and industry leaders in attendance. ITF’s Director-General, Dr. Afiz Oluwatoyin Ogun, describes the partnership as a strategic move to close the skills gap driving building collapses. Through the SUPA initiative, artisans will gain modern techniques, certification and continuous professional development. The scheme aims to enhance workmanship, enforce industry standards and boost artisans’ employability and earnings, strengthening public confidence in construction nationwide.

Upskilling 100,000 artisans is ambitious, but I wonder if the resources and trainers are sufficient nationwide.

Training alone won't solve collapse issues unless ongoing support, quality materials, and regulatory enforcement are also addressed.

Partnering with local trade associations could streamline candidate selection and maintain standards throughout the training cycle.
