Nationwide June 12 Protest to Demand Security and Relief from Hunger
A coalition led by human rights lawyer Femi Falana and 16 civil society groups has called a nationwide protest on June 12. The demonstration coincides with Democracy Day and aims to highlight worsening insecurity, mass abductions and a sharp rise in hunger across the country. Organisers—including trade unions, youth movements and faith-based organisations—say repeated security failures have left rural communities, commuters and schoolchildren living in fear. They accuse the government of broken promises while policies like subsidy removal, currency devaluation and tariff hikes have fueled historic food inflation and crippled small businesses. Under the banner of the Alliance on Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond, leaders urge Nigerians—workers, market women, unemployed youth, students and professionals—to mobilise locally. They demand the immediate release of all captives, a reversal of anti-people policies and a government that prioritises security, dignity and a decent standard of living.
