Tinubu Declares Himself ‘Apostle of Free Press’, Urges Responsible Journalism

President Bola Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom during the inaugural State House Media Corps Presidential Dinner in Abuja. He described the media as an indispensable partner for building a stable, democratic Nigeria and pledged to protect journalists’ constitutional rights. While defending the free press, Tinubu warned against misinformation, fake news and AI-driven falsehoods. He urged journalists to balance rights with responsibility by prioritising factual accuracy over sensationalism and respecting the duty to report verified information. He also defended the Cybercrimes Act as a safeguard for Nigeria’s information integrity and cited constitutional guarantees for free expression and media oversight. The President emphasised that a healthy democracy relies on mutual respect between government and press. He encouraged constructive engagement, insisting that credible journalism is more vital than ever in the age of social media. Tinubu also highlighted recent economic reforms and security operations as evidence of his administration’s progress.
