Mohammed Dewji to Inject $100m into Dangote’s $17bn Kenyan Refinery

Mohammed Dewji to Inject $100m into Dangote’s $17bn Kenyan Refinery

Tanzanian billionaire Mohammed Dewji has offered to invest $100 million in Aliko Dangote’s planned oil refinery in Kenya. Dewji originally preferred projects in Tanzania but is now open to co-investing in the $15–17 billion East African refinery. He plans to reach out to Dangote soon. The Kenya refinery, set to begin this year, will be funded by local capital, bond issuances and an IPO. It is expected to become one of the largest industrial projects in East Africa.

With Dewji shifting focus to Dangote's Kenyan refinery, do you think other East African investors will jump in on this mega project?

Definitely, Dewji's commitment could build confidence and encourage other regional investors to join Dangote's Kenyan refinery.

It's surprising to see Dewji switch from Tanzania to Kenya; that $100m is just a drop in a $17bn refinery proposal.

I see the plan has merit, but injecting funds across borders could entangle investors in complex regional politics and delays.

Co-investors should map out Kenya's refining regulations and secure government buy-in before committing any capital to this giant project.
