EFCC Probes Undeclared $73,300, £15,957 and 827,800 Riyals Seized at Kano Airport
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigating the interception of undeclared foreign currencies at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. The Nigeria Customs Service said it made two interceptions between 8 and 12 August 2026. Officers reportedly found 827,800 Saudi riyals and $53,300 concealed in footwear inside an unaccompanied Saudi Air luggage. In a separate operation, Customs flagged luggage linked to Haruna Yusuf, who arrived on Ethiopian Airlines flight ET941, and allegedly recovered $20,000 and £15,957 concealed in sports shoes. Customs handed Yusuf and the recovered currencies to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution. The agencies said travellers carrying large sums of money must declare them, noting that declaration itself does not attract a penalty but may prompt questions about the source of the funds.
