Benue Peace Meeting Turns Deadly as Miyetti Allah Chairman Is Ambushed
Tension has risen in parts of Benue State after gunmen shot dead Alhaji Risku Muhammad, the state chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, as he returned from a peace dialogue. His friend, Yakubu Isah, was also killed at Okudu village in Otukpo Local Government Area. The meeting, called by the Divisional Police Officer in Ohinmini, aimed to restore calm in Ayunne Community following earlier violence. Attendees included Fulani herders and community leaders. Local government chairs in Otukpo and Ohinmini confirmed the attack and urged residents to stay calm while security forces investigate. The Benue State Police Command says an inquiry is ongoing. The national leadership of the association condemned the killing as a “dastardly act” and called for a transparent investigation. They warned that targeting peace advocates undermines efforts toward reconciliation and urged authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice.
