WAFCON: Esther Okoronkwo Faces Racist Abuse After Reported Hotel Theft
Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has reportedly faced racist abuse online after alleging that more than $1,000 was stolen from her belongings at the team’s hotel in Morocco during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Moroccan police have reportedly arrested a suspect over the alleged theft. However, Okoronkwo’s social-media pages were later flooded with abusive comments, including racist monkey emojis and claims that she fabricated the incident. Okoronkwo restricted comments on some posts and responded with a message of unity and determination: “Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.” Her Super Falcons teammates have also shown support as she prepares to return to the pitch.
