NDLEA Busts Syndicate Planting Drugs in Passenger Luggage at Abuja Motor Park

NDLEA Busts Syndicate Planting Drugs in Passenger Luggage at Abuja Motor Park

NDLEA operatives in Abuja and Anambra have dismantled a ring that plants illicit drugs in travellers’ bags at motor parks. During a checkpoint inspection on June 20, agents intercepted a Sienna bus from Nnewi and recovered 467.7 g of suspected methamphetamine hidden inside a waybill package within a sack of clothes. Follow-up raids led to the arrest of the intended consignee at Utako Motor Park. Although she denied knowing about the package, loaders in Nnewi confessed the bus driver instructed them to slip the drugs into her luggage. Continued questioning also resulted in the arrest of the alleged owner of the consignment. The NDLEA FCT Command says investigations are ongoing to dismantle the entire network and protect unsuspecting travellers from similar schemes.

How do you think travellers can better protect their luggage from these kinds of drug planting schemes at motor parks?

Are Abuja motor parks really equipped for systematic luggage scans, or do most rely on quick visual checks that plants can slip past?

It seems surprising that buses from well-known routes could be exploited like this without more thorough security checks happening earlier.

I'm not convinced the NDLEA operation alone will deter these syndicates for long if parks don't change how they screen passengers' bags.

Motor park operators should introduce random bag inspections and better collaborate with security agencies to prevent future concealment of drugs.
