Supreme Court Restores Forfeiture of Emefiele’s Lagos Properties and $2.045m

Supreme Court Restores Forfeiture of Emefiele’s Lagos Properties and $2.045m

The Supreme Court has upheld the EFCC’s appeal to seize seven luxury properties linked to former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele. A five-member panel led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa set aside the Court of Appeal’s order for a fresh hearing. In its unanimous judgment, the apex court reaffirmed a Federal High Court ruling that found the assets were likely acquired with illicit proceeds. The forfeited holdings include detached duplexes in Lekki, bungalows and duplexes in Ikoyi, land in Agbor, eight apartment units in Ikoyi, and $2.045m in cash and shares. Emefiele’s legal team argued against the forfeiture after the Court of Appeal’s June 2025 reversal, but the Supreme Court nullified that decision and reinstated final forfeiture. The properties and funds now vest in the Federal Government.

What long-term effects could this Supreme Court ruling have on the EFCC's ability to seize assets from former officials?

I agree, this verdict just gives EFCC fresh swagger in grabbing assets down the road.

It's rare to see unanimous judgments in high-profile forfeiture cases; this suggests significant legal consensus or pressure behind the scenes.

I'm not convinced pressure was at play; the unanimous ruling might simply show strong, undisputed legal merit.

I'm not convinced this will deter future misconduct; powerful elites often find new legal loopholes to protect their assets.

Lawmakers should tighten asset declaration and enforcement rules to prevent similar legal battles over disputed properties in the future.
