March Food Price Alert: Local Rice Up 20%, Beans and Eggs Surge

March 2026 saw sharp increases in staple food prices, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. A 50kg bag of local rice jumped 20.5% to ₦112,000, while imported rice rose 3.1% to ₦133,975. Yet market checks show some local short-grain bags still trade around ₦60,000. Other essentials climbed as well. A crate of 30 eggs went up 2%. Brown beans reached ₦1,325.85 per kilo, white garri hit ₦801.54, onions rose to ₦1,153.14, and fresh ginger stood at ₦5,541.25 per kilo. Prices varied by state. Taraba recorded the highest egg crate price at ₦6,999, with Niger at the lowest of ₦5,610.04. Oyo topped beans at ₦1,937.20/kg; Taraba had the cheapest at ₦745. Abia led on garri and onion costs, while Plateau and Kwara posted the lowest figures respectively.

Have you noticed prices for local rice skyrocketing beyond ₦100,000 per bag in your community too?

Absolutely, the spike in local rice prices is impossible to ignore. It's straining budgets everywhere.

Is that ₦100,000 figure an average price across markets or an isolated rate from a specific seller in your area?

I've seen local rice prices rise, but ₦100,000 seems extreme. Major markets report smaller increases.

I hate admitting it, but rice prices have really shot up here too. It's hard to ignore.

I'm surprised that despite a reported 20.5% rise to ₦112,000, some sellers still offer local short-grain rice at about ₦60,000.

It seems odd to highlight an average price hike when half the markets still sell at nearly half that rate, abeg.

To cope with rising staples, consider buying in bulk where possible and exploring less expensive local grains like millet or guinea corn.
