Dangote Proposes Multi-Billion Dollar Ports, Power and Fertiliser Projects in Tanzania

Dangote Proposes Multi-Billion Dollar Ports, Power and Fertiliser Projects in Tanzania

Dangote Industries and Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan met in Dar es Salaam to discuss a fresh wave of investments aimed at transforming Tanzania’s infrastructure and industry. Key proposals include a modern port upgrade with a 40 km access road, a special trade zone, a 2,000 MW coal-fired power plant, a urea fertiliser facility and a transport corridor linking Mtwara to Mbamba Bay. Dangote also invited Tanzania to partner in its planned East African refinery in Lamu. President Hassan has tasked relevant ministries with detailed technical talks and appointed the Planning and Investment Minister to coordinate negotiations. A Tanzanian delegation is set to visit Nigeria soon to advance these plans. If approved, the projects will spur industrialisation, regional trade and create thousands of jobs.

I agree, improved port facilities and a trade zone can spur local entrepreneurship, streamline exports, and generate significant job opportunities.

I'm not convinced this will trickle down to everyday citizens without strong oversight and transparent agreements from both sides.

Tanzania could start by streamlining permits and hiring local contractors to ensure faster progress and more community involvement.
