PFIPC Budget Scandal: Why Nigeria Needs Full Transparency and Accountability

PFIPC Budget Scandal: Why Nigeria Needs Full Transparency and Accountability

The debate over the so-called Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council has grown beyond a single individual. It raises urgent questions about how Nigeria’s public institutions guard against errors, fraud and abuse. Official statements insist the PFIPC is not a government body and that its alleged Director-General faces forgery and impersonation charges. Yet over ₦1.3 billion for this council appeared in the 2026 federal budget. Nigerians deserve to know who inserted that allocation and how it passed numerous approval stages. To restore trust, the government must publish relevant records, explain how the disputed council entered the budget and outline reforms to prevent future lapses. The National Assembly should independently review the process and share findings publicly. Ultimately, accountability and transparency are essential to protect public funds and maintain confidence in our institutions.

A public register of PFIPC's expenditures and third-party audits could build trust and help watchdogs spot irregularities early on.
