Ex-NECO Employee Jailed 24 Years for Forged Diploma

Ex-NECO Employee Jailed 24 Years for Forged Diploma

A former NECO staff member has been sentenced by a Niger State High Court to 24 years in prison for certificate forgery and related offenses. The Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) proved that Abdulwahab Sule used a fake diploma purportedly from Modibbo Adama University to secure employment in 2009. The court found him guilty on three counts, including using a forged document and making false statements. Investigations revealed the certificate, dated March 2008, was not issued by the university. Sule admitted he paid ₦30,000 for the forged document and had not completed his studies. His sentences on each count will run concurrently, totaling 12 years of actual imprisonment. The ICPC urged public institutions to verify staff credentials regularly and warned that forgery and corruption would not go unpunished.

Protocols may not be the real issue; human oversight often opens the door for misconduct, not just procedural gaps.

It's surprising that someone employed by NECO could fake credentials from a major university without detection for years.

While forgery is serious, sentencing 24 years seems excessive compared to other white collar punishments in our courts.

Companies should add periodic verification of employee qualifications to avoid similar costly forgeries in the future.
