Oscar Retires at 34 After Life-Threatening Cardiac Episode

Former Brazil and Chelsea midfielder Oscar has retired at 34 after suffering a serious cardiac arrest during a training session with São Paulo in November 2025. Medical tests revealed he has vasovagal syncope, a condition that causes sudden drops in heart rate and blood pressure. His heart stopped for about two and a half minutes, and he required CPR on the pitch. In a statement to the club’s media team, Oscar confirmed the diagnosis. He said that stepping away from football is the only safe path to protect his health and wellbeing.

Teams and players should prioritize regular cardiac screenings and awareness of fainting risks, especially after stressful training sessions.
