Ilaje Communities Threaten 2027 Election Boycott as Ocean Surge Destroys Homes

Twenty coastal communities in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State have threatened to boycott the 2027 general elections unless the Federal and Ondo State governments urgently act on worsening ocean surge and coastal erosion. The communities say the advancing Atlantic Ocean has destroyed homes, schools, health facilities, fishing grounds, places of worship and other infrastructure. They claim Ayetoro has lost about 85 per cent of its land, while residents in several other communities face displacement and loss of livelihoods. After a press conference in Ayetoro and a peaceful protest in Igbokoda, the coalition demanded sea walls, groynes, shoreline protection works, emergency relief, safe water, medicines and temporary shelters. It also asked the Federal Government to declare the Ilaje coastline a national disaster zone and release emergency intervention funds. The protesters said their “no project, no vote” position is a call for accountability, not a rejection of democracy. They also called for improved drainage in flood-prone Igbokoda and a clear government action plan to prevent more coastal communities from being lost to the sea.
