14,118 Communities in 33 States and FCT at High Flood Risk in 2026 – Minister

14,118 Communities in 33 States and FCT at High Flood Risk in 2026 – Minister

The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation warns that 14,118 communities in 266 LGAs across 33 states and the FCT will face high flood risk in 2026. Another 15,597 communities in 405 LGAs in 35 states are under moderate threat, while 923 communities in 77 LGAs have low risk. Ekiti is the only state not affected. Major cities like Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt, Ibadan and Kano could see flash or urban flooding, and coastal riverine floods are expected in Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Lagos, Ogun, Rivers and Ondo. This outlook is based on hydrological forecasts and scientific assessments presented by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency. The minister urges states to integrate flood risk into urban planning, improve drainage and floodplain management, and strengthen early warning systems. The federal government is boosting hydrological monitoring, partnering with NiMet and NEMA, and rolling out automated river gauges and advanced modelling to save lives and limit economic losses.

I've seen similar warnings before with little follow-through from authorities, so I wonder if this new alert will really change anything.

We shouldn't freeze all development based on projections alone; communities here need balanced planning, not just fear-driven decisions.
