Remembering Prof. Gabriel Saawua Nyityo: Nigeria Mourns a Brilliant Scholar

Remembering Prof. Gabriel Saawua Nyityo: Nigeria Mourns a Brilliant Scholar

The news of Prof. Gabriel Saawua Nyityo’s tragic death, alongside his younger brother, has left me grief-stricken and shaken by how fragile life can be in our country. As a former student at Lagos State University, I will always cherish his mentorship and the rigorous challenges he set in our Early African Civilization class. His guidance shaped my work on the history of Catholicism and later on our Anioma people. Until his untimely passing, Prof. Nyityo served as a Full Professor of Social and Political History at Benue State University, Makurdi. He was celebrated for his bold scholarship and dedication to nurturing future historians. This horrific loss underscores the urgent need for stronger public security and better protection for all citizens. May his memory inspire higher safety standards and continued excellence in Nigerian scholarship.

It's striking how often scholars become targets of violence, yet we rarely debate true causes behind these tragic events.

While mourning is natural, shouldn't we focus more on systemic reforms to prevent such tragedies rather than just paying tribute?

Universities should establish memorial lectureships that carry Prof. Nyityo's name while supporting student safety initiatives on campus.
