Should INEC Use Cameras to Monitor Elections and Improve Transparency?

INEC should consider using cameras to monitor elections at polling units and wards. Video coverage could improve transparency, strengthen security and help Nigerians follow events as they happen. If technology is used to reduce examination malpractice, similar tools should be considered for elections. With the commission’s large election budget, voters deserve stronger safeguards that can support credible, free and fair polls. Nigerians should not have to depend only on news reports to know what happens at polling units. Better monitoring could build public trust in election results.

Would cameras at polling units mainly deter misconduct, or would the bigger benefit be letting Nigerians follow events as they happen?

I agree; public visibility may matter more than deterrence, since transparency lets people judge the process themselves.

Cameras could help, but video coverage alone may not automatically strengthen security or guarantee transparent elections.

INEC could start with a limited rollout at selected polling units and wards, then assess whether live coverage is workable.
