Onitsha Student Dies by Suicide After Relationship Breakup, Police Investigate

On June 18, 2026, the body of a 25-year-old female student was found in her Onitsha residence. Investigators recovered a note in which she described a painful breakup with her boyfriend following three terminations of pregnancy. Anambra State Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu confirmed the case is being treated as a suspected suicide. He has ordered the file to be moved to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka for a discreet and thorough inquiry. The commissioner warned that this tragedy highlights the need for stronger parental guidance and robust emotional support for young adults. He called on families, community leaders, schools, religious bodies, and civil society groups to step up mentorship and advocacy programs that teach resilience, positive values, and responsible living.
