Why Adeleke and Fubara Face Different Political Battles

Adeleke’s reported victory in the Osun governorship election has renewed comparisons with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara. Some commentators argue that Adeleke’s ability to retain power shows he was stronger politically than Fubara. However, the two cases are not identical. Adeleke built a personal political base over years as a senator and grassroots politician. That gave him more freedom to realign when party disputes emerged. Fubara’s rise, on the other hand, was closely linked to the political structure of his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. His conflict with Wike was therefore a battle against the same structure that helped bring him to power. Comparing the two governors without considering their different political bases, state dynamics and access to independent loyalists oversimplifies Nigerian politics.
