Court Bars INEC from Recognising Disputed ADC Congresses
The Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained INEC from recognising any congress organised by the African Democratic Congress’s disputed caretaker leadership. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik also barred former Senate President David Mark and other defendants from interfering with the tenure or functions of duly elected state executives. Ruling on an originating summons filed by Norman Obinna and six other state chairpersons, the court found the caretaker committee lacked authority under both the ADC constitution and section 223 of the Nigerian Constitution. The judge set aside the caretaker-appointed congress committee and ordered that only elected party organs may conduct future state congresses.
