Kontagora Catholic Diocese Calls for Swift Security in Shanga after Deadly Easter Attack

Kontagora Catholic Diocese Calls for Swift Security in Shanga after Deadly Easter Attack

By Abdullahi Tukur in Birnin Kebbi The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has appealed to the federal and Kebbi state governments for urgent action to restore security in Shanga Local Government Area. Bishop Bulus Yohanna made the call through Rev. Fr. Mathew Kabirat at Saint Dominic Catholic Church in Yelwa Yauri after a deadly Easter Sunday attack in Debe village. About 500 people, including men, women and children, are now displaced and urgently need food, clean water, medical care and shelter. The diocese is currently hosting 491 internally displaced persons at its Yauri church grounds and is calling for long-term measures such as increased security deployment, community rehabilitation and ongoing welfare support. The violence claimed at least 24 lives across religious lines and left properties worth millions of naira in ruins. Nearby communities like Birniwa and Kalkami also suffered arson and looting. While welcoming relief efforts from local authorities, the diocese urged NGOs, individuals and the international community to provide additional humanitarian assistance.
