Anthony Taylor Retires After 20 Years of Top-Flight Refereeing
Anthony Taylor has ended his 20-year refereeing career, citing the “intense pressure” and constant scrutiny at the elite level. He officiated 831 matches, including 432 Premier League games and every major domestic cup final. His final assignment was Spain’s 1-0 win over Portugal in the World Cup last 16 on July 6. Taylor began as a prison officer before joining the Football League in 2006 and earning promotion to the Premier League in 2010. He also featured on FIFA’s list of officials for 14 years and took charge at the 2022 World Cup and the Euros in 2020 and 2024.
