Queen of Soul: Aretha Franklin’s Journey from Gospel Roots to Global Icon

Aretha Franklin rose from singing in her father’s church in Detroit to becoming the world’s Queen of Soul. She signed with Columbia Records at 18 and found her breakthrough with Atlantic Records in the late 1960s. Her hit albums include I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You, Lady Soul, Amazing Grace and Who’s Zoomin’ Who?. She also appeared on stage, television and in films like The Blues Brothers. Franklin faced personal challenges, including early motherhood, two marriages and a fear of flying. She had four sons and balanced family life with a demanding career. She died in Detroit in 2018 at age 76 from a rare pancreatic tumor. Her powerful voice and cultural impact continue to inspire artists around the world.

It's notable she started with Columbia at 18 but only found true success years later with Atlantic in the late sixties.

I'm not convinced a label switch alone explains her breakthrough—raw talent and timing must have mattered just as much.

Try listening to her early gospel recordings alongside Atlantic hits to hear how her style evolved over time.
