Court of Appeal Upholds Hanging Sentence for Onitsha Armed Robber

Court of Appeal Upholds Hanging Sentence for Onitsha Armed Robber

The Court of Appeal, Awka Division, has affirmed the conviction and death sentence of Chizoba Ede for armed robbery. He was originally sentenced by an Anambra High Court on June 15, 2022. Prosecutors said Ede and four accomplices attacked a victim along Upper Iweka, stabbing him and making off with money and valuables. Passersby raised the alarm and vigilante operatives arrested Ede. He later confessed and led police to the gang’s hideout. Ede appealed, alleging poor legal representation and flawed evidence assessment. The appellate court dismissed his claims and ruled he received a fair hearing before upholding the conviction and sentence.
