Did Abraham and Lazarus Suffer in Hell Before Jesus Rescued Them?
Many ask whether Abraham and Lazarus endured hell’s torment before Jesus freed them. According to Scripture, they rested in Paradise, or “Abraham’s bosom,” a place of comfort separated by a great gulf from the place of torment. After His death, Jesus descended to the lower parts of the earth and released the righteous souls when He rose. Luke 16:19–31 describes the rich man in torments and Lazarus in comfort with a fixed gulf between. Jesus told the thief on the cross, “Today you will be with me in paradise” (Luke 23:43). Paul writes that Christ “descended first into the lower parts of the earth” and then “ascended on high, He led captivity captive” (Ephesians 4:8–10). This confirms that Abraham and Lazarus were not in the burning hell of the damned.
