Court Orders ₦15m After Man Sues Ex for Backing Out of Marriage After Sponsoring Her Degree
A Nigerian man dragged his former girlfriend to court after she refused to marry him despite his promise to fund her university education. He met her after secondary school and agreed to pay for her four-year degree when her parents insisted she attend university first. After she graduated, she told him she no longer had feelings and declined to marry or refund his support. Her parents advised him to move on, arguing their daughter was an adult with the right to choose. The judge, however, ruled in the man’s favour. He held that a serious promise relied upon to one party’s detriment may warrant legal remedy. The court ordered the defendant to pay ₦15,000,000 in damages. The ruling noted her refusal to honour the agreement caused financial and emotional loss to the plaintiff. (Reported on social media.)
