Ghana’s Dagbon King Ya-Na Abukari II Dies in South Africa Amid Diplomatic Row Over Migrants

Ghana’s Dagbon King Ya-Na Abukari II Dies in South Africa Amid Diplomatic Row Over Migrants — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Ya-Na Abukari II, the Dagbon king of northern Ghana, has died in South Africa after a brief illness. He acceded to the throne following a violent succession dispute in 2002 and later championed reconciliation and reforms. Traditional rulers in Ghana help settle disputes, preserve culture and support local development. His passing will set in motion the process to choose a new king in the coming months. His death comes amid diplomatic strains between Accra and Pretoria over recent attacks on migrants. Ghana has condemned violence against foreign nationals and called for accountability after a Ghanaian was killed in Cape Town. South African authorities maintain the incident was linked to alleged extortion, not xenophobia.
